  2. Build problem solving skills

  3. Get higher grades

  4. Get a higher SAT score.

Vohra Method group classes provide extremely individualized education in a group setting. Group classes are available for subjects ranging from algebra to AP History, but the most popular group classes are our SAT group classes.

Our SAT group classes provide intensive training for the math and verbal sections of the SAT. But they also go beyond that, building academic skills, problem solving grit, flexible thinking, analytical logic, and persevering relentlessness. For many parents and students, our SAT classes embody the kind of education they’ve been seeking their entire lives.

  1. Vohra Method Group Classes are insanely individualized.

In our group classes, each student’s work is checked after every problem. Each problem is closely analyzed for any issue. If there are any errors, the student does training to address the relevant skills. This lets our students relentlessly build and reinforce their critical fundamentals.

There is no group class anywhere with this level of individualized targeting. In fact, our group classes are more individualized than many tutoring programs!

  2. Vohra Method Group Classes are extremely efficient.

Most school classes and SAT prep classes give up on ever trying to fix students’ underlying gaps. Many students have years’ worth of gaps in math and grammar, and most teachers are not equipped to address such major issues.

Vohra Method group classes are efficient enough to address even major underlying gaps. Because of the individualization, an hour of our group class is equivalent to about 10 hours of school. This lets us target and fix even severe underlying gaps.

  3. Vohra Method Group Classes promote persistence.

The secret to problem solving is persistence. A student who can stick with a problem for 30 minutes will beat a student who gives up after 30 seconds. In our group classes, students learn to relentlessly attack challenge problems, grinding away at them until they figure them out.

Persistence doesn’t just make you better at math; it makes you better at life. Those who develop relentless grit and persistence reach much farther than those who don’t. For more on this, consider reading Angela Duckworth’s excellent book, Grit.

  4. Vohra Method Group Classes build speed.

The first time a student faces a challenge problem, it may take him a few days to address the underlying gaps, and then even more time to figure out the problem. The second time he sees a similar problem, it may take a few minutes. By the third time, it only takes a few seconds.

Our students blaze through tough problems on their actual SAT. But that extreme speed comes from taking the time needed to build the needed problem solving skills. Just as a tennis superstar might painstakingly practice his serve in order to dominate Wimbledon, our students relentlessly build each part of their academic skills in order to dominate the SAT.

  5. Vohra Method Group Classes eliminate careless mistakes.

Through “partial credit”, schools reward and encourage sloppy work. In most schools, wrong answers get almost the same reward as right answers! Many students don’t bother to develop the skill, care, or precision needed to get right answers.

At Vohra Method, we correct that. First, we fix underlying gaps. Many “careless” mistakes aren’t careless at all, but actually reflect well-hidden, underlying issues. We find and fix those issues.

But we also hold students to the high standards necessary for SAT success. We build the care, organization, neatness, and precision needed to get every question right on the SAT. Part of that is by letting carelessness punish itself. If a student gets a problem wrong because of a careless mistake, the student needs to figure out what went wrong. We don’t tell the student where the careless mistake is; the student must struggle with the problem until she figures it out.

Watching the change in students is incredible. When students start the program, their math work often looks like graffiti in a gas station bathroom stall. Within a few days, their work starts looking like the organized work of a veteran architect. When students have to immediately face the real consequences of carelessness and the benefits of precision, their work quickly transforms.

  6. Vohra Method Group Classes teach direct solutions to the hardest problems.

The unfortunate reality is that most SAT prep courses have given up on teaching students how to directly solve SAT problems. Instead, most SAT courses and tutors see the sheer number of underlying gaps that most students have and give up on ever trying to address them. Instead, they teach inefficient and unreliable workarounds. These gimmicky workarounds include “plug-in”, “backsolve”, and various elaborate and unreliable forms of process of elimination.

In our group classes, we teach direct solutions to even the hardest problems. Our individualized, nonlinear approach allows us to build underlying skills as needed, and our understanding of real problem solving allows us to guide students through the process of solving the toughest SAT problems directly, reliably, quickly, and efficiently.

Learning direct solutions is necessary if you want to get a 1500+ SAT score. But it’s also important to be able to use algebra in college! If you don’t know how to use algebra, then most science, math, and  economics courses are not an option. Even degrees in psychology require one or more courses in statistics, which requires algebra. Learning to avoid algebra reduces your educational options.

At Vohra Method, we address and thoroughly fix all underlying gaps in math, grammar, and reading.

  7. Vohra Method Group Classes eliminate all busywork.

Our group classes are education without busywork, political agendas, or any of the other nonsense that wastes so much time in schools. Through relentless prioritization, we make sure students focus on what matters the most, rather than frittering away their time and energy on pointless projects and low value topics.

Critical topics, such as factoring, get heavy emphasis. Unimportant topics, such as stem and leaf plots, are not part of the training. Students master what matters instead of getting bogged down with valueless topics.

  8. Vohra Method Group Classes reflect our experience in online education, and prepare students to excel in an online workforce.

We went completely online long before COVID, and we bring over a decade of experience in running intensive online classes. Our classes are radically different from the dumpster fires we saw when schools attempted online education.

Most online classes look terrible and sound worse. Videos are either off or look deranged, and the most common sentence you hear is, “sorry, I was on mute,” while people fumble around with their mics.

At Vohra Method, things are completely different. We create a modern, immersive environment that has the kind of immediacy you see in an in-person class. First, students’ microphones are on at all times. To enable that, we use advanced noise cancellation and effective equipment. We also use professional, modern visuals. While most Zoom rooms look like bingo night at a nursing home, ours look like modern, minimalist studios. As part of that, students use minimalist, uniform, modern backgrounds that encourage professionalism and focus.

Just as Netflix is more engaging than plays, our online classrooms are far more engaging than offline classrooms. As a nice bonus, our classroom requirements and expectations prepare our students for online interviews and online work, giving them a lifelong advantage over their competition.

You may be thinking that a course like this might have benefits past a higher SAT score. You’re right. Reinforcing fundamentals and building problem solving skills will increase your SAT score…but it will also help you dominate your high school and college courses. More than just SAT classes, our group classes are a complete upgrade to your middle and high school education.

FAQ:

Do the classes cover both the math and verbal parts of the SAT?

Yes.

Are these classes better for advanced or struggling students?

Both! The extreme individualization allows each student to work at his or her level and pace. Notably, many students are advanced in one area and struggling in another. For example, a student might struggle with verbal and excel at math. Our extreme individualization allows students to work on both areas at the appropriate level.

What is the cost of the classes?

There are various packages. As an example, our 8 week package, at two 2-hr sessions per week, is $35 per hour. On the other hand, if you want to only do drop in classes for 1 hour, then it’s $50 per hour.

How long does the training take?

Our group classes have tutoring DNA. Like tutoring, our group classes have no fixed time length. Instead, our group classes have checklists. For our SAT classes, the range is usually 6 - 24 months (meeting twice a week, for two hours each session), although some students fall outside that range.

One way to think of it is like sports. Our group classes take students from “intramural” level SAT skill to Varsity level SAT skill…and then all the way to the All American level. The amount of time this takes varies hugely from one student to the next.

What age should a student start Vohra Method group classes?

For most students, starting at age 11-13 is ideal. Some highly precocious students may benefit by starting earlier.

However, the most common age range that people start our group classes is 15-16. If you start later, you can easily catch up by doing 4-5 sessions per week, instead of 2 sessions per week.

Are the classes online or offline?

Our classes have been fully online since long before COVID. Our online classes allow much more precise individualization and much faster gains than our older offline classes.

A bit of history: for a while, we had online and offline classes at the same time. But we realized that the students in the online classes were progressing much faster! So we made our offline classes identical to the online ones. Students would bring laptops to the classroom, and do the online classes sitting five feet away from the instructor. Eventually, that started to seem a bit silly, so we moved everything online.

How much homework is there in group classes?

None. In group classes, you do everything during the sessions. Your work is carefully monitored and analyzed in real time during class.

Are group classes your lowest cost option?

Group classes have the lowest hourly cost, but not usually the lowest total cost. The lowest total cost SAT training we offer is Chelsey’s accelerated tutoring program. That program is a homework intensive program and thus requires fewer in person sessions. Our group classes have no homework and thus require more sessions.

Is there an accelerated option?

It’s easy to accelerate group classes by increasing the frequency. You can do up to five 2 hour classes per week.

Is there a sibling discount?

Most, but not all, of our group class programs have some kind of a sibling discount. We do this to encourage younger siblings to start earlier. Starting earlier leads to better results, higher scores, and higher grades.

What is the full list of subjects offered in group classes?

SAT, PSAT, ACT, AP Integrated Humanities (a course that prepares students for all 8 AP History and English Exams), AP Calculus (BC), Physics Preview (taken in the summer before you start physics), Chemistry Preview, AP Biology, Algebra, Precalculus, and Prealgebra.

Here is a video about the history of our group classes. This describes our original group classes which were in person. Today, our group classes are far more advanced and effective, but maintain many of the ideas and principles of the original group classes.

The most common question students ask after their first class is, “Why is this class so hard?”

The most common question students ask after a month of training is, “Why don’t they just make schools like this?”
