Ethics

Vohra Method is driven by one fundamental ethical principle: we make kids smarter. Conversely, we do not engage in any action that would make a student less intelligent or capable. This principle shapes what we do and don’t do. In particular, it affects the types of parental involvement allowed during tutoring sessions.

Most types of parental involvement are extremely helpful. There are a small number of well-meaning parental approaches that can hamstring a student’s development of intelligence, grit, and ability. Those tiny number of problematic approaches are disallowed at Vohra Method.

For any subject, parents are welcome to meet with me independently through my parent consulting program. This program is basically “tutoring” for parents, and is often used to help design strategies for younger students. In addition, parents are welcome to discuss anything they like at the start of any tutoring session. For that matter, parents can discuss anything they like in the middle of a session as well, although that may require pausing the tutoring until the parental conversation is completed.

For college essays, other application essays, and other essays: parents should not be present during brainstorming, writing, or editing. Once a student-created essay has met my approval, parents may meet with me for additional editing. This ensures that students are developing writing skills and verbal intelligence.

For other subjects: parents should not be present during active tutoring on a subject. However, tutoring can be paused at any time to allow discussion with parents.

For strategic discussions, such as planning out overall strategies, considering different summer programs or internships, etc., parents are welcome to attend.

For homework: parents should not help students with homework at all.
